Especially in the fourth essay, Freud unfolds a bold speculative theory about the beginnings of culture by tracing the origin of the feeling of guilt and the incest taboo to traumatic events in the prehistoric family: the murder committed by the horde of brothers against the original father. Freuds account of the centrality of loss in culture has been seen as seminal for his later work, Civilization and its Discontents. The book was one of the author's favourite texts throughout his life and was described by Thomas Mann as a "masterpiece akin to and belonging to all great examples of German essay writing". Building on the second essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud argued that such an attitude left civilians in particular unprepared for the stark horror of industrial-scale death in the Great War. Libby, or "Lib" for short (which is almost "Bill" backwards) filled in for Pastis, a character in his own strip, after he was hit on the head. That email led to Watterson drawing the middle panel in Pearls Before Swine Wednesday through Friday this past week, "ghost drawing" the artwork provided by the character Libby. "It was just a silly idea, and I didn’t know Stephan, so I never pursued it, and years went by." "Several years ago, when Stephan did one of his strips that mocked his own drawing ability and mentioned my strip in comparison, I thought it might be funny for me to ghost Pearls sometime, just to flip it all on its head," Watterson told Cavna. Watterson gave his side of the story to Michael Cavna at the Washington Post, and as it turns out, Watterson already had the idea to team with Pastis before he received that email. " Pastis wrote, ".He had a comic strip idea he wanted to run by me." And he had a great sense of humor about the strip I had done, and was very funny, and oh yeah. Bill Watterson really exists?
